Landscaping & Your Fence: A Symbiotic Relationship

Landscaping Your New Custom Built Fence Workshop™ Fence:

At Fence Workshop™, we think adding landscaping to one of our custom built fences can drastically increase the beauty of any outdoor living space. Landscaping can also be used to further increase the privacy provided by one of our wood privacy fences, or even chain link fences with privacy slats installed. Landscaping, when done right, appeals to all the senses and assists in visually defining the perimeter of your property.

How To Get the Most out of Your Landscape:

Our fences, when paired with great landscaping, add long-lasting beauty and can add style to the plain base of a fence. Commonly, our customers use landscaping near fences as a way to hide or minimize the negative space created when building some larger fences.  The most important functions of fence landscaping are to add beauty and style, take advantage of an otherwise underused planting space, or attract birds and beneficial insects to your property. Create the greatest visual impact in the shortest time by planting mature plants, or reduce upfront costs by planting younger plants, which will also give you more time to enjoy the nurturing aspect of gardening. And if you need any help, we’re here for you. We work with experts in the industry and can assist you in any landscaping decisions made for your property.

Landscape and fence planning by in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina.

A Few More Details:

Another point to remember when planning fence landscaping with our expert staff is to give young plants enough room to grow unimpeded by the fence. If this is not considered early on, be prepared to transplant them as they mature. Also, choose plants whose roots will not undermine the fence’s foundation over the years. If we’re adding to an existing fence on your property you could give an older fence new life by creating a unique rustic design that complements the condition of the fence. Turn older planks of wood into neat focal points by adding lavender or viburnum. Landscaping for a fence can inexpensively add year-round beauty to your property.

Something You May Not Have Considered:

A fence can create what is called a “microclimate” in the area next to it by blocking winds and raising temperatures. Make the most of this benefit by using plants that may not grow as well in other parts of your property. Add to the fragrances of flowers by planting them alongside tall, solid fences that prevent the aroma from dissipating as quickly as they would in a more open area. Low-growing plants add bright borders to backyard fences. Use our white vinyl or painted wood privacy fences as backdrops to highlight colorful flowers and foliage on your property. See details on flowers more easily by placing them in front of a plain fence. White or light-colored fences will reflect more light on plants, helping the plants to develop evenly, thus increasing your fence landscaping’s beauty even more.

Chain Link and Plants: The Facts

Another fence type to consider is chain-link fencing. Chain Link fences from Fence Workshop™ are built with quality gauge wire, are open, and provide excellent support for climbing vines such as Clematis paniculata, commonly known as Sweet Autumn Clematis, and Ipomoea alba, commonly known as moonflowers. Let low-growing plants accent a fence, and in particular, those fences with decorative tops. Bright bursts of color from flowers such as marigolds can anchor a fence and make it more visually appealing. Put plants into containers and add them to places where in-ground planting is not feasible. Container planting increases flexibility by making it easier to swap plants at shorter intervals without having to dig in the ground. Containers can add color, pattern and depth to an otherwise flat area near your fence.

Care and Consideration:

Finally, watering plants near a fence can be tricky. Protect the fence and try to water only the plants and not the fence. Exercise caution when watering with a hose and direct automatic sprinklers to reach the plants but not as far as the fence. Large plants with full foliage will reduce the amount of air circulating around the fence and will block direct sunlight, which raises the chance of fungus on wood fences or mold on vinyl fences. Fence Workshop™ can add sealants and make repairs on fences before delicate flowers or winding branches start to limit access to the fence.

Consideration For Your Neighbors:

As a rule: Do not plant invasive species on fence lines marking a neighbor’s border without permission. Plants do not respect property deeds. Hedera helix, commonly known as English Ivy, is a prime example of a plant landscapers should avoid because of its aggressive growing habit. English Ivy will spread over, under and through fences. Avoid creating attractive nuisances along any perimeter fences. Steer clear of plants that produce inviting but poisonous berries where children are likely to pass your property. Similarly, avoid pretty but prickly plants in those same areas.

Fence Staining and Sealing

Fence Staining and Sealing

Stain and Seal in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina

Fence Workshop™ knows you need your new fence stained or sealed to keep it looking great! Staining and sealing can turn a good looking fence into a great looking fence, as well as turning a long lasting fence into a really long lasting fence.

The Benefits of Stain and Seal

For Pressure Treated Pine:

The most important thing about a fence is the material used in its construction. If a customer has a pine fence then it is advantageous to the life of the fence to protect it with some sort of staining/paint or sealant. Since pressure treated pine is only protected from rot and bug infestation, it still has a strong tendency to warp. Warping occurs when the boards collect moisture overnight, or were freshly pressure-treated and “wet”, and are then drastically dried out by the sun. This causes fence panels to shrink and dis-form, leaving curved pickets, rails, and possibly posts. The thicker the piece of wood the less likely it is to warp.

With pressure treated pine lumber, the pine is soaked in chemicals to protect it that will stay in the wood for about 1 to 3 months, depending on the humidity, weather of the region, the season, and when/were it is installed. To properly apply a stain or paint, the product needs to penetrate the wood. This cannot happen if the chemicals are still inside. Because of this, we recommend waiting until the wood has dried properly before applying the stain or sealant product. The two major reasons for protecting the pine are:

  • -To inhibit warping by applying a sealant that will not allow moisture to keep entering the wood.
  • -To protect from UV discoloration on the out layer of the pine.

When pine gets “burnt” it does not look pretty; unlike cedar that burns a uniform pewter/gray color – pine will burn to a splotchy grey and brown. This can be unsightly and can make the fence or deck look much older and less presentable within the first 8 months.

For Cedar Lumber:

Cedar lumber has natural oils in it that protect from rotting and bug infestation. Because of this fact there is no need for a chemical treatment, thus the wood is dried and ready to be protected as soon as it is installed. Cedar is the one product that does not need to be protected to prevent warping since it is a much more stable species. The only reason to put  a protectant on cedar will be to keep the wood from aging. UV rays will bake the outer layer of the wood causing it to grey. Some customers and avid gardeners like the look of aged cedar and will leave the product alone. This is absolutely fine if you don’t mind the color, as the wood will still hold its dimension for up to 20-25 years.

From fencing for historic preservation to world class neighborhood entranceways, no project is too large or detailed for our highly talented group of designers.

Design Criteria & Location Considerations for Fencing:

Fence Utility

The most important design factor is what you need your fencing or screening to do. Common fence and privacy screen requirements include: creating visual privacy, limiting access to the property, providing security as a barrier to entry, defining a property line, enclosing a pool or play area, creating wind resistance or shade, and creating a backdrop for viewing a garden. The requirements of the fence will also impact:

  • -Height (the standard 6 foot can be substituted to your individual desire)
  • -Terrain following (with multiple levels)
  • -Flow around a natural landmark (tree, boulder or stream)
  • -Privacy (using solid fencing)
  • -Access by pathways and gates
  • -Built-ins (plant containers, benches, privacy nooks, plant shelves, vine trellises, and lanterns)
  • -Utilities (electricity for lights and access to water outlets should be considered when building your fence)

Neighbors & Your Property Line

Before a design is approved, it is very important to obtain consensus with all your neighbors on the style, height, orientation, and finish of the proposed fence. It is also wise to verify the official property line and work out construction access and pet containment before the fence work begins. If you are unsure of your property lines, your project manager will attempt to find preexisting ground stakes.

View

A fence provides a natural way to obscure the surrounding neighborhood or highlight views of your garden. Consider what you do and don’t want to see, both walking around and sitting. Framed openings can highlight a distant focal point.

Wind

In areas that experience high winds, a more open fence design, extra bracing, and heavy duty hardware may be needed. Prevailing winds may create the need for the fencing to create an area of wind resistance or protection.

Water

Excessive moisture (from rain, hosing down, sprinklers and deep shade) can lead to premature aging, structural damage from rot and musty smells. The fence should be designed to shed rain and dew readily and have good drainage away from the site, leaving no standing puddles. For a long life, ivy and heavy vines should be kept off the fence with a climbing trellis mounted in front to minimize contact. For the longest life, the structure/fence should be allowed to dry out well after raining or watering plants, especially if you plan for it to support vines.

Material & Design Options For Wood Fences:

Materials

To maximize the life expectancy, the frame should be made of pressure treated lumber set in steel column bases. The posts and fence boards can be made from Redwood, Pine, Cedar, or Cypress. Better wood grades and thicker fence boards and beams lengthen the life expectancy of your fencing.

Finishes

Heat and light contribute to weathering, so a UV protective finish is important. If it will eventually be covered with hard to remove plants, it is very important to apply multiple coatings. Stains (clear, tinted, or solid) and paint are popular finish choices.

Accessoires & Built-ins

Trim, moldings, lattice, post caps, finials and fence art add to the uniqueness of your fence. Adding accessories can enhance your fence’s functionality. These include built-ins such as benches, privacy nooks, plant containers and shelves, vine trellises, and lanterns.

Metalwork

Accents, such as copper post caps or blackened iron joining straps, can enhance the appearance of your fence or screening.

Lighting

The choice of lighting style and fixtures (solar lights, such as lanterns hung from posts, mounted sconces, and spot lighting) can create an immediate sense of style.

Fence Installation

Fence Installation: Why Is It Important?

Fence Workshop™ How you install your fence is just as important as the quality of material you purchase. That’s why Fence Workshop wants to provide all the information you need to get your fence installed correctly. From what tools to use, to what standards are best for which types of fence, we’ll have you covered. Even if you plan to hire a professional installer to put up your Fence Workshop fence, we want you to know which questions to ask and what things to look for to make sure the correctly procedures are done to make your fence last the longest it can.

Setting Fence Posts:

We suggest our posts be set in a premixed combination of high grade concrete and a product known as Quick-Rok™, well below the ground’s frost point (this will prevent a common problem known as post heaving). The Quick-Rok™ is an additive that will triple the strength of the concrete and also dramatically reduce the time it takes for the post to set. This will allow for a post that is two to three times as solid, permanent, and precisely set. Using techniques like this, combined with the highest quality materials, is just one of the factors that make our fences so strong.

Garden Fencing

Garden Fencing: The Most Delightful of All Fencing

Benefits to Installing a Garden Fence with Fence Workshop™:

Fence Workshop™ knows that installing a garden fence can be a great deterrent for invading wildlife. Our staff at Fence Workshop™ thinks it can also be aesthetically pleasing. Finding the balance between the two can be a real challenge, however, so we have some tips that could be the difference between an ordinary and extraordinary result.

This Beautiful Garden Fence is a Phone Call Away From Your Backyard:

At Fence Workshop™ we specialize in creating functional and fashionable garden fence solutions. Whether your selection of fencing is simple or more advanced, garden fencing should be considered part of the total landscaping effect of your yard. Your budget, your time, and of course the effort you want to put forth will dictate your fencing project outcome. Garden Fencing, as with any fencing, can be a great DIY project for the family, which is why we provide materials for those wanting to install it themselves.

Wildlife and How to Deter it:

Professional garden fence sales and supplyTo effectively prevent wildlife from raiding your garden, a fence that surrounds the vegetable growing area is mandatory. In addition, any deterrent fence should be dug well into the ground so digging and burrowing animals can’t get under the fence and gain access. Metal and vinyl are some of the best materials to use for deterrent fences because of their resistance to natural deterioration processes. Wood fences are certainly an option as well. Garden fencing should surround the area on all sides, adding more along the edges of the garden as you see fit. Force the fence poles well into the ground for stability. The height of the fence posts should be even and two feet above the tallest veggie or flower you are trying to protect. Keep your fence posts about a foot away from the edge of the garden to prevent wildlife from simply leaning over the fence to eat as they wish. Try digging a trench of six inches from pole to pole and place netting into the ground, covering it with dirt. This will further help to prevent burrowing animals. Adding a gate adds accessibility to your garden and keeps animals out.

Some Ideas to Add Spice to Your Design

A border of tall growing flowers or oriental grasses can create a beautiful and natural looking effect for your fence, or even a hedge of evergreen or holly. Don’t be afraid to combine a few fence materials to create a uniquely secluded area for your gardening area. A wood gate surrounded by a mix of great flowers and shrubs as well as trimmed grasses will create an inviting entrance to your garden. Decorative fences can also be created from your favorite outdoor objects. If wind chimes are a favorite, accent each corner of the garden with a chime on a fence post. Use ornamental garden objects such as statues or benches strategically placed with tall plants as a border. Plant herbs in antique pots and tea-kettles and arrange them as a fence. Or, for the true artists, use sculptures, bought or made, to create a one-of-kind, unique fence environment to contain your beautiful garden.

Ready to Get Started?

Before starting a garden fence, check your town’s building and zoning codes. Many codes exist, and might be enforced, regarding a fence’s height, the distance from a property line as well as materials that can or cannot be used.  If you have questions about any of these points, be sure to bring them up with an associate at Fence Workshop™. We can help go over these details and more. The last thing you want is for a “monetary fine” or “disassemble order” to come in the mail after your time, effort and money have been spent. Decide where you’d like the fence to be located and its shape, size and measurements – don’t be afraid to think round, rectangular or any shape. Our experts at Fence Workshop™ can assist you in the planning and architecture of any fence you decide on. Remember, not all fences must surround a square or rectangular area. Next, ask yourself what needs you are trying to meet by installing a fence. If you’re looking to keep the garden safe from wildlife, structural stability may be the key factor as opposed to style, but with many of our fencing options, you don’t have to sacrifice one to get the other. Contact us to get started!
